How it works
The image is decoded and redrawn as PNG, a lossless format — the conversion itself introduces no additional quality loss beyond whatever the original JPG already had. Converting to PNG pays off when the destination program requires PNG, or when you will edit and save the image several times: every JPG save recompresses the image and piles up loss, while PNG does not. It is also the starting point for building a logo on a transparent background in an editor, since PNG supports transparency. The PNG made here comes out opaque: JPG has no transparency channel, so there is nothing to preserve, and the conversion does not cut out the background.
