How it works
Each page is drawn as an image by the PDF reader built into the tool. At 1x the image has 72 points per inch, or 1 pixel per point; the recommended scale, 2x, gives 144 dpi: an A4 page becomes an image of about 1,191 × 1,684 pixels. At 3x (216 dpi) text is sharper, but the file is larger. If you convert more than one page, the JPGs are bundled into a ZIP. JPG has no transparency, so the page background is painted white. Compression quality is fixed at 92%, high and suited to text and photos in most cases. For pages with fine text or diagrams, PNG keeps more sharpness.
