Does the PNG have a transparent background?

Where the page has no background drawn, yes. If the PDF has a background of its own (a solid color or an image), it shows normally.

When should I prefer PNG to JPG when converting a PDF?

For pages with fine text, charts, tables or slides, where sharpness matters more than file size. For pages of photos, JPG is much smaller.

Is the PDF I convert to PNG sent?

No. The pages are rendered in the browser and the PNGs are created on the page.

How it works

Each page is drawn as a PNG image by the PDF reader built into the tool. You can convert every page or only some (for example 1,3,5 or 2-10), and if you convert more than one, the PNGs are bundled into a ZIP. PNG loses no quality and keeps fine text and diagram lines sharp, which makes it the right format for capturing slides, charts and pages with tables. At the recommended scale (2x, 144 dpi), an A4 page makes an image of about 1,191 × 1,684 pixels. Unlike JPG, the PNG here is not painted white: where the page has no background, the image comes out transparent, which is handy for placing the page over other colors. If you need a white background, open the image in an editor or use PDF to JPG.
