How it works

A number base defines how many distinct digits exist before counting rolls over into the next place. Decimal (base 10) uses 0-9; binary (base 2) uses only 0 and 1, and is how a computer represents everything internally; octal (base 8) uses 0-7 and still shows up in Unix file permissions; hexadecimal (base 16) uses 0-9 and A-F, and is the compact way to write bytes — every pair of hex digits is exactly one byte, which is why CSS colors and memory addresses use it. The conversion itself is always the same process: read the value in the source base and rewrite it in the target base, without changing the number itself.
