How it works

Unix file permissions are three groups of three switches: read, write and execute for the owner, the group and everyone else. Each group is written as one octal digit by adding read (4), write (2) and execute (1), so rwx is 7, r-x is 5 and r-- is 4, and chmod 755 means rwxr-xr-x. A fourth leading digit adds the special bits: setuid (4), setgid (2) and sticky (1). This tool only calculates the value and the command; it never touches a file, so you run the command yourself on your own machine.
