How it works
Liter, milliliter and cubic meter are units of the International System (metric). Gallon, quart, cup and fluid ounce follow the US customary system of volume measurement, different from the British imperial system. One liter equals 1,000 milliliters. The US gallon splits into 4 quarts, 16 cups or 128 fluid ounces, so a quart is 4 cups (about 946 mL) and a cup is about 237 mL. American recipes that call for "1 cup" mean that cup; if a recipe also gives the amount in milliliters, measure in milliliters to keep the proportions right. In the metric system the scale is direct: 1 m³ holds 1,000 liters. A 1,000 L water tank is exactly 1 m³, and a 20 m³ pool holds 20,000 L.
