How it works
Square meter, square kilometer, square centimeter and hectare are units of the International System (metric). Acre, square foot and square mile are imperial units, common in the United States and the United Kingdom. One hectare equals 10,000 square meters. The hectare is widely used for rural areas and large plots of land; a professional soccer field covers about 0.7 hectare. In Brazil the alqueire is also used, with a size that varies by region, which is why it is not on this list. A 60 m² apartment is about 646 square feet. A 360 m² lot (for example, 12 × 30 m) is 0.036 hectare, or about 0.089 acre. The area of a rectangular plot is simply width × length, in the same unit.
