How it works
Celsius and Fahrenheit are the most common everyday scales, while Kelvin is used in scientific contexts because it starts at absolute zero (the lowest temperature physically possible). To convert to Kelvin, add 273.15 to the Celsius value. A few reference points: 0 °C = 32 °F (water freezes), 37 °C = 98.6 °F (human body temperature) and 100 °C = 212 °F (water boils at sea level). The formula is °F = °C × 9/5 + 32, so an oven at 180 °C is at 356 °F. Watch out for the difference between a temperature and a change in temperature: a rise of 10 °C equals a rise of 18 °F (just multiply by 1.8, without adding 32); only an absolute temperature takes the +32. Kelvin has the same degree size as Celsius, it just starts at another point, which is why it is written "300 K", without the degree symbol.
