How it works
Kilometer per hour and meter per second are units of the International System (metric). Mile per hour is common in the United States and the United Kingdom, while the knot is used mainly in marine and air navigation. One meter per second equals 3.6 kilometers per hour. The most common request is km/h to mph. For a sense of scale: 100 km/h is about 62 mph, and 60 mph is about 97 km/h; in your head, multiply km/h by 0.62. The knot measures nautical miles per hour and is the unit of ships and aircraft: 1 knot = 1.852 km/h, so a boat at 20 knots moves at about 37 km/h. A car at 100 km/h covers about 27.8 meters every second (100 ÷ 3.6). The foot per second (1 ft/s = 0.3048 m/s) shows up more in engineering and in American specifications.
