How it works
Profit is the difference between the selling price and the cost: profit = selling price − cost. Profit margin is profit relative to the selling price: margin (%) = profit / selling price × 100 — it answers "what fraction of what I charged is profit?". Markup is profit relative to the cost: markup (%) = profit / cost × 100 — it answers "how much did I add on top of cost?". Margin and markup use the same profit, just divided by different bases, so they're never the same number (except when profit is zero).
